Saja speaks to me

Yesterday we found clothes for Margaret. Today I find clothes for me.
What do we know about me? Colorful and child like with the occasional dip in granny's closet. Saja is all that with a sexy dose of glamour.

Alex Prager

Alex Prager's photography is what I dream of. Colorful / Costume / wigs / Cindy Sherman-esque/ Hitchcockian. Brilliant all around. I only have a few pictures to show you here and they are not even my favorites but the site has so many more amazing shots. Her shots are great cause I wish I took them and I wish I was in them. Just awesome.

I don't get it

I enjoy the smell of bacon being cooked up for breakfast (though I won't eat it cause it makes ill). But what I don't get is the obessession over EVERYTHING BACON? Bacon donuts - Bacon Churros - bacon chocolate - Those sound nutty but at least I understand the culinary adventure of mixing sweet and savory. Last night I saw a commercial for Taco bell or Del Taco advertising a normal burritto that has "bacon topped with bacon". Is bacon just the national FU to our attempts at getting this country out of the obesity catagory? Or is it a government conspiracy to help pig farmers just like they did with "Got Milk" to help the dairy farmers? Or do people really love the flavour of bacon that much?
Eitherway, how do you explain this? Bakon Vodka?

If you would rather taste it than talk about it - go here.

Ada Pleats, Please

Ada Pleats Peep Toe Pumps by Frye. They are a bit steep in the cash area but they are super cute. I love the grey.

Built by Wendy

There are a few people in this world for whom I am in love with with a love that is not of the sexual sense or marrying kind. One would be my brother the handsome philosophical fireman and Second would be my friend and constant inspiration Margaret for her style and technique in life.
This post is for her.
I was gazing upon Built by Wendy's spring 2009 collection and kept saying to Potsch "this is totally margaret" I may have been off on a few selections but none the less I believe Margaret would look stellar in these. (though I really don't see her in the tiered ruffle skirt but the shirt for sure)

Erin Tyner and her tiny world

Erin Tyner is a self taught photographer living in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband and dog and selling her beautiful photographic work on etsy. I love tiny people and their macro world. Something so mysterious about the blur. I also love that she makes collecting art fun and affordable.

This last shot is called The Clearing. On Erin's Flickr photostream this shot is accomanied with this:
"The Clearing

Suddenly I stop
but I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone

The girl was never there
it's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
again and again and again

lyrics from "A Forest", The Cure"

I love it even more now.

Butter by Nadia

I love these dresses. They are amazing and I want one! You buy one dress and get like fifty. Convertible Dresses by Butter by Nadia. Granted they are around $300 but I am thinking that is worth it. They look so pretty on the model and on the adorable girl who does the style video. Seems like a good dress for pregnancy as well. I was thinking I would have my bridesmaids go for this look but i don't think I want them spending $300.
Watch the video on the site. I never get any sound but the girl is so cute.

Pretty Planters

I am posting these for two reasons:
1. I think they are very cool and pretty
2. I think Margaret will like them and want them in her beautiful home.
POD Aluminum Planters made of spun aluminum and powder coating with steal stands and rubber safety reinforcement. They come in 6 color options but you can still have a custom color created just for you! And they are Locally made. If you live in Los Angeles they are Locally made!

The Be Side Jewelry

How can you not want to be a part of something that describes them self as "Handmade Rock'n'roll vintage inspired Jewelry". It just sounds sexy.
The Be Side's products are odd and beautiful and fair priced I must say.

Jason Lazarus - Photographer / artist

I was lucky enough to have Jason Lazarus as one of my photography professors when I attended Columbia College in Chicago. I learned a lot from him and he was very supportive of my conceptual side. I have been doing a lot of actors headshots and product photos for the past few years and have neglected my artsy conceptual side but after gazing upon his work I am feeling inspired again to carry my camera and make art.
I am a big fan of Jason's series "Living with a Portrait". I am always intrigued with the artist process. How much is set up? How much is thought out? How much is made up of the mundane added with the artist's magic?
I miss being in school and getting to learn more from people like Jason. Thank God for the internet.

My first Crush by Julia Pott

I have had a lot of crushes in my life and this sweet animation is on my list.

Tone of Everyday

"This music video was shot for Sour's 'Hibi no Neiro' (Tone of everyday) from their first mini album 'Water Flavor EP'. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base, from many countries around the world. Each person and scene was filmed purely via webcam."

This video is awesome! how they choreographed it I do not know. But brilliant none the less.

New Math

I was never very good at math. Well, that is not totally true, I was good at math until they gave out all that homework - then I decided that I was not very good at math and just gave up trying to be. But now with New Math i'm getting quite good. hehehe
I saw this a while ago :

and it made me laugh and I have repeated it with out knowing where it came from - now I do. New Math is a project done by artist Craig Damrauer. He also has a project from 2006 that makes me laugh called Alien Abduction Works.

Bike brilliance

This is perfect for a loft or garage or even an apt. Get your bike off the floor and out of the way AND do it in style with the Cycloc! The cycloc comes in some lovely colors and are made from 100% recycled plastic. This little bucket is genius! you just turn it to the angle your top tube (or bar) is at and adhere it to the wall. It even comes with a matching insert panel to hide the fixings. There is a hole to slide your bike lock chain in so your are safe to leave your bike in your apt garage. And the bucket space inside is great to keep your gloves or any small items you need when you need your bike. All and all brilliance.

Kid Friendly Mid-Century Modernist Wall paper

Brilliant! I was all for this until Potsch brought to my attention that not all children are great artists. Then i said "but if they are yours everything they do is amazing." But then I thought it out a bit... and he was right. Having a child- even your own- draw on your coloring book wall paper is neat if that space is '1x'1 but to have a whole wall - maybe even a room- I am not sure that would look so amazing. And then i remembered the genius trick my mother would do in situations such as these.
The Christmas Tree Scheme.
When we would put the tree up in our living room it was a big deal and a big night. We would listen to xmas carols and have hot chocolate or apple cider and lay out all our ornaments on the coffee table and take turns selecting which shiny ball or strand of beads or trinket from a trip in the past we were going to hang. Then we would spend minutes trying to figure out where the best spot on the tree would be for this special bauble to hang. It was a great night. Our tree always looked amazing - even better the next morning. Here is where the Christmas Tree Scheme came into full action. The children would be safe in bed with sugar plum fairies and all that jazz and my mom would be fine tuning the composition of the tree flair, just to get that perfect controlling balance.
Point = coloring book wall paper is a perfect family activity. The kids can leave their mark and you can swoop in later to make their mark sweet and stylish rather than sloppy and childish and still have happy memories.

Wall paper is available at Mini Moderns.

Eleanor Wood is amazing

I found Eleanor Wood the other night and have been dreaming of her lovely collages ever since. I am a big fan of collage -my guess, is cause that is how I see the world on the inside but I am not top notch when it comes to designing them on the outside. Eleanor's work has such ease. Her pieces have this lovely balance of reality and fantasy. There is something attainable and relatable to them.
I would love to have one framed and displayed in my home. When I think about my fantasy life it definitely includes Eleanor Wood's work.

Eleanor also has a blog and a website.

40 Weeks complete

I did a posting about this lovely couple and their brilliant photo series documenting their pregnancy. Well, it has been exactly 40 weeks and beautiful Tessa Tangerine arrived perfectly on her due date! Amazing series. Amazing Family. Amazing idea.
Much love to Tessa and her fantastically cleaver parents, Ryan and Cole, and her little brother LB.
See the whole series here and check out Ryan's entire blog. Always great stuff.

Emiliana Torrini is playing LA!!!

Potsch and I just got our tickets tonight to see Emiliana Torrini. I get nervous planning so far in advance but she is worth it and August 19th is not THAT far in advance. She will be playing at the ever so lovely El Rey. I like shows there cause you can make some room and just cut loose if you're feelin' it.

In case you are not familiar or you just want to smile - here is her video for Jungle Drum. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. I want to be in some part of our wedding but not sure where. Anyway, the video is brilliant cause it makes me feel like a kid with a crush - so gitty and innocent. And the end of the video reminds me of Thanksgiving in elementary school.

Mobile Cusine has taken the scene

I am fascinated by the mobile culinaria take over. Thanks to Twitter we can follow taco trucks, churro trucks, ice cream trucks - you name it, if you crave it they probably have a truck for it. I find this new trend just another example of how as adults we work really hard to just be kids again. I am certainly not mad about that.

Here are a few to follow if you aren't already:
and please please send me more if you got them.
Kogi BBQ
Don Chow
CoolHaus
Salina's Churros Truck

Thai Gazpacho

Tastespotting is this awesome site FULL of food photos and when you click on the photo you can get the recipe. Here is one for a Thai Gazpacho. I can't wait to get all the fresh ingredients at the farmers market and make this yummy soup!

Thai Gazpacho (click for full recipe)
Serves 4 for a light lunch

  • 8 luscious vine ripened field tomatoes
  • 3 field cucumbers, or 1/2 English cucumber
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/4 cup red onion (~ 1.5″ wedge)
  • 1-2 Thai birds eye chilis *
  • 2 tsp fish sauce **
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 limes (juice of both, 3/4 tsp lime zest)
  • 3/4″ chunk ginger (2 tsp)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 large fresh sprigs basil (2 tbsp chopped)
  • small handful cilantro (1.5 tbsp chopped)
  • salt and pepper

* Thai birds eye chilis are hotter than a devil in the desert, so remember that it’s always easier to ramp the heat up rather than cool it down. If you’re feeling a bit tentative, start with 1 chili after you removed the ribs and seeds. For a medium heat use both gutted chilis, and if you like it hot, hot, hot! leave the ribs and seeds of the chili intact.

** Fish sauce is, indeed, made from fish. However, there are many great vegetarian fish (flavored) sauces on the market if you were going to make a strictly vegan soup.

Reduse, Reuse and Recylce AND get PAID!

I wish I knew about this before when i was cleaning out potsch's stuff for our move in together. He used to have a drawer full of old cell phones and chargers. We had no idea what to do with them so we just passed them off to goodwill. At least, I think, that counts as reuse. But who could not use a few extra bucks back on something we probably already spent more than a few on?
YouRenew makes it easy. And look at all the electronic stuff they want to buy from you! Now, I have yet another reason to get the new iphone 3gs - i can just use the money I get back from selling my old iphone 3g. Brilliant!

Wasn't cool then but it sure is cool now

School Furniture. Why is it that we dread spending one more extra minute on campus or in the classroom when we are younger but as soon as it is not mandatory we show up - that is all we want to do. "Please, I want to learn more!" I find my self yelling this in my mind quite often. I just can't get enough classroom time now. Well, not only can I get it but I can live in it and sleep on it and do whatever I see fit on it.
School Outfitters has heard our library voice cries and has answered back with an abundance that will make you wish for detention.
here is just some but the website is mind blowing.

I like these a latte

I can't figure out if I like theses shoes cause they are on sale for $40 or if it is cause their color is called Latte or if it's cause they are from Nicole Millers line called "Classy".
which ever - no matter- i like them! (they have a couple other colors too)

Who does not need to rest their head?

I need these. All of them. the more I think about it the more I want / need them
Thank you Vintage Jane for causing me another obsession.

Timeless Vixen

I am still leaning toward a colorful wedding dress but I am open to almost anything. I do love vintage but i don't want my dress or over all look to come off too much like a costume. Potsch and I are big on costumes any day but I think we would rather have our day reserved to style rather than humor - not in an uptight way...oh jeeze i don't know. It seems like it will all just come together some how. Ha, I have lost my mind.
Point - Timeless Vixen Vintage has some stunning and well maintained vintage dresses that I would love to wear any day maybe even my big day.
